Client: New Castle County Department of Libraries

The Hockessin Library, the first built in New Castle County in sixteen years, has almost 15,000 square feet for reading rooms, book storage, technical services, administrative offices, and public meeting. The character of the interior has been shaped with attention to gaining natural light through clerestories. The light-filled entrance facilitates book circulation and information dispensing operations.

Reading areas are oriented toward the adjoining park. Storage and work spaces along the roadside reduce noise intrusion. Accommodating the increasing use of electronic media was also emphasized. The design, including landscape treatment, has been carefully integrated with surrounding parkland and is responsive to a full range of environmental factors. Storm water is managed through a variety of innovative measures including a ground water recharge system, one of the first in the county, and the shaping and planting of the land beyond the building to slow run-off and facilitate percolation into the subsoil.
